Efiwe has been selected to join the Ventures Platform AI Foundry, a 9-week technical programme for founders and technical leaders building production-ready AI products for African markets.
Ventures Platform, one of Africa’s most active early-stage investors, runs the AI Foundry as a small, selective cohort designed around a single premise: that building AI for African markets requires more than good intentions. It requires technical rigour grounded in the realities those markets actually present, such as multilingual users, informal economies, unreliable infrastructure, and devices that most global platforms never design for. The programme pairs founders with world-class AI practitioners across nine structured sessions covering AI product strategy, data readiness for low-resource environments, model selection and cost analysis, system architecture, AI safety and security, MLOps, and product economics.
For Efiwe, this is not an abstract opportunity. It is a direct continuation of the work the platform has been doing since it launched on August 16, 2025.
Every design decision in Efiwe has been shaped by the constraints the AI Foundry curriculum is built around. The platform runs entirely on basic smartphones, works completely offline after a single initial page load, supports 246 languages plus sign language, and is free at its core. Its dual-model AI architecture (a lightweight on-device model for offline use and a more sophisticated cloud model for connected learners) was built precisely to serve users in environments where internet is expensive, intermittent, or both. Efiwe Zero, launched in May 2026 on the MTN Nigeria network, takes this further still: allowing anyone with a basic feature phone to learn to code using nothing more than an SMS.
The numbers behind the platform reflect what that approach produces. Since launch, Efiwe has grown to more than 13,000 learners across 139 countries. Nigeria and India lead in adoption. The platform has completed successful school pilots in Uttarakhand, India and Lagos, Nigeria, run a structured coding partnership with Teach For Nigeria across 10 schools in Lagos and Ogun State, and expanded its AI-powered learning experience into Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and SMS, so learners can access the full curriculum without downloading anything at all.
That trajectory has attracted institutional recognition from several directions. In March 2026, the International Telecommunication Union selected Efiwe as one of the world’s most innovative AI education startups through the AI for Good Innovation Factory, a UN-backed startup acceleration platform. Also in March, Efiwe was shortlisted for the 2026 Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation by the Royal Academy of Engineering, joining 15 other innovators from 11 African countries. In May, Efiwe was accepted into the ninth cohort of the Builders of Africa’s Future program, run by the African Diaspora Network, selected as one of 13 enterprises demonstrating a sustainable solution to a key community need, proven traction, and a compelling vision for scale.
The AI Foundry adds to that picture, and arrives at a moment when Efiwe’s technical surface area is expanding meaningfully. May 2026 alone saw the launch of the Python course, Efiwe’s fifth and first back-end language, built around 420 challenges. It also saw the launch of Group Plans, bringing three structured tiers to Group Accounts for schools, NGOs, and organisations running coding education at scale. The One Click Chrome extension (Efiwe’s AI-powered job application tool) received three major upgrades. Battery Saver Mode was significantly expanded. Language support grew from 189 to 246, the single largest language expansion in the platform’s history.
The AI Foundry’s curriculum is designed to help founders sharpen product strategy, build sound technical foundations, and ship AI systems that hold up under real-world conditions. For a platform that has spent less than a year demonstrating exactly what those conditions look like (and building for them), the next nine weeks are an opportunity to go deeper on the foundations that will carry Efiwe through its next stage of growth.
