Until now, Read Aloud used the speech engine built into the learner’s browser or phone, which reads text competently but audibly as a machine. For a learner meeting a technical concept for the first time, a robotic voice adds effort to material that is already demanding. The ElevenLabs voice pauses where a teacher would pause, and rises and falls where meaning calls for it.

Read Aloud reads lesson introductions, task descriptions, hints, and diagnostic explanations. As the voice speaks, the current word is highlighted on screen so learners can follow along, a feature that proved to be the most demanding part of the work. Browser speech engines announce each word as it is spoken, and the original highlighting was built on those announcements. Audio files announce nothing. ElevenLabs returns per-character timing data alongside the audio, and Efiwe maps that timing onto the words on screen, driving the highlight from the audio itself rather than from engine events. Highlighting is now more reliable than before, because it no longer depends on events that can be delayed when a phone is busy.

On mobile, the page follows the reading. Previously the voice would continue reading text that had scrolled out of view on a long lesson. The page now scrolls to keep the spoken words comfortably in view, and stops following as soon as the learner scrolls by hand.

“A voice that sounds like a person is not a luxury on a five inch screen,” said Abhinav Negi, Co-founder and CEO of Efiwe. “It is the difference between a learner following the lesson and a learner working out what the machine just said. Our users are learning on buses and in shared rooms, on phones. The voice has to get out of the way.”

Chidi Nwaogu, Co-founder and CTO, added, “The grant is generous and it is finite, so we built the budget into the platform rather than into a spreadsheet somebody checks on Fridays. Every read is metered before it happens, unused allowance carries forward month to month, and when we approach the ceiling the platform falls back to the device voice automatically. Nobody sees an error. The lesson still reads.”

Efiwe elected not to restrict the premium voice to paying learners. Subscribers and paid group members receive it on every read, while free accounts and signed-out visitors receive it once every five minutes, matching the rhythm already used for Efiwe’s cloud AI features. Between premium reads, the device voice takes over without interruption.

ElevenLabs voices currently cover thirty-two languages, while Efiwe supports lessons in substantially more. Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, and Swahili are not among the languages any current model can voice, and lessons in those languages continue to be read by the device’s own speech engine. Efiwe checks the language before any request is made, so no credits are spent producing a voice that would mispronounce the text, and paying learners who select an uncovered language see a short notice explaining why the voice has changed.

The change is available immediately at efiwe.com.

Efiwe learners now hear lessons read in a natural, human-sounding voice, following the award of an ElevenLabs Grant.
